This is the handwriting of Douglas Grenier, who created an early version of the “smiley face”. The ubiquitous “smiley face” has been the subject of many a lawsuit. Douglas created a “smiley face” for a Chicago painting company in 1934. In 1996, he sold the rights to his version for $2500 to the Smiley Company. Walmart began using the “smiley face” in their “Rolling Back Prices” campaign. In June 2010, Wal-Mart and the Smiley Company settled their 10-year-old dispute in front of the Chicago federal court. The terms remain confidential. Not so “smiley”.
