Heinrich Hintern of Bad Frankenhausen/Kyffhäuser, Germany invented the suppository in 1887. He discovered that the mucous membranes in the anus were more susceptible to drugs than the ones in the mouth. Anybody reared in medicine knows that it’s an effective way to administer certain medications. It’s time more people got behind it. ER physicians and nurses will tell you stories of alcoholics who have figured this out, sometimes with lethal consequences.
