This simple font was inspired by the later writings of Joan the Lame of France. She became known as la male royne boiteuse (“the lame evil Queen”) and commissioned the translation of several important contemporary works into vernacular French, including the “Miroir Historial” of Vincent de Beauvais and the “Jeu D’échecs Moralisés” of Jacques de Cessoles. Despite her physical limitations, she became a powerful, learned woman. Joan died of the plague on 12 September 1348.
