This is the handwriting of Ned McPhetter, a chemist with Crescent Foods in Seattle who invented Mapleine, an imitation maple flavoring. Mapleine was invented in 1908 and was a huge hit during the Depression. An early enforcement action of the United States Pure Food and Drug Act in 1909 found that the product was misleadingly labeled to represent actual maple extract. They changed their labelling and the rest is history. Hey, as a son of a mother who lived through the Depression, I never tasted real maple syrup until I was 30 yrs. old. I like it! As distribution of Mapleine shrinks, worried consumers are buying it wherever and whenever they can find it. I got mine!
