This is the handwriting of Arthur B. RIves, lead engineer on the IBM 350 disk storage unit in the 305 RAMAC system. In 1956, IBM introduced the 305 RAMAC system, generally acknowledged as the first computer to feature a “disk drive”. The IBM 350 disk storage unit occupied the space of two refrigerators and weighed a ton. “How much storage capacity you ask”? Wait for it…………………………….5 MB. The development of this font was financially supported by the Mountain View, CA chapter of the IEEE.
