Sharon Bracegirdle began her music career as a flute player in the Spartanburg Middle School band in South Carolina. After entering High School, she wanted to be in the marching band and make her presence known – she decided to play the sousaphone! As she only weighed 93 pounds, she had some initial problems balancing the horn. At a pregame party at the Spartanburg Municipal Swimming Pool, she lost her balance and fell in the pool with her horn. From then on her nickname was (as you would guess) – “scuba tuba”.

In April of 1993, she penned the now famous sousaphone joke:

What do old people and sousaphones have in common?

They both are uncooperative and are hard to get in and out of cars.
