This is the handwriting of Garrett Augustus Morgan, businessman and inventor of one of the first traffic lights. Morgan was one of the first to apply for and acquire a U.S. patent for a traffic signal after witnessing a collision between an automobile and a horse drawn carriage. The patent was granted on November 20, 1923. Unfortunately, it proved to be unsuccessful as he had four light colors – green for “go”, red for “stop”, yellow for “caution” and puce for “gun it!”. As you might expect, it caused more accidents than it prevented.
