Alexander Carnes was a 15th-century candle maker who gained a reputation for creating elaborate candles of great size. One single candle was reputed to have been 30-feet high and Carnes claimed it would burn for 10 years. Unfortunately, the candle was left in the sun on a summer day after a wild party and it melted before it could ever be tested.
