Kalman is a handwriting font fashioned after the handwriting of Hermann Kalman, one of the founders of the Hood RIver valley fruit industry in Oregon. Hermann brought his family to Hood River from Punxsutawney, PA in 1862 and planted an apple orchard. Unwittingly, he planted crabapple trees instead of apple trees which led to his bankruptcy. However, since crabapple trees are excellent pollinators, he later regained his fortune selling crabapple trees to the growing number of apple orchardists.
