This is the handwriting of Chris de Las Casas of Marietta, Georgia. He was born Christopher Columbus and as you might imagine, he’d always been fascinated with Christopher Columbus the explorer. As he read about how Columbus treated the indigenous people of the New World, he became disgusted with his own name and had it legally changed. He took the surname of Bartolome de Las Casas, who bore witness to the atrocities of the Spanish colonists. Bartolome renounced his past life and became a friar, committed to social justice for indigenous populations. Chris has petitioned the state of Georgia to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day across the state. You can sense his determination by the way he uses all caps!
