OK, this one had me stumped. Turns out before my time here at vLetter they did a handwriting font for Sarah Sanderson who at the time was a researcher at the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute. Turns out that during a whale research trip, she documented for the first time whales “spyhopping”. She coined the word for whales’ behavior of holding their bodies upright, partially out of the water. She observed the behavior a few times and finally determined that the whales were checking out their surroundings. So, if you see a whale go “periscope up” while whale watching, they may be giving you the stink eye!
